- The MVP Bystander Education Model: Leading Campus Prevention Efforts for Two Decades – Alan Heisterkamp, Ed.D., Director, MVP Leadership Institute, Center for Violence Prevention, University of Northern Iowa
Engaging bystanders has emerged as an effective way to prevent or intervene in social situations where harassing or aggressive behaviors are present. This session will highlight the Mentors in Violence Prevention Model (MVP) developed in the early 1990s. MVP is based on a peer leadership model that establishes the role of the “bystander” to safely confront abusive behaviors by empowering those who might otherwise be silent observers to situations where aggression and violence are unfolding. MVP has been implemented on college and university campuses, in high school settings, the U.S. military, and within collegiate and professional sports.

This breakout session will discuss the standards applicable to OCR’s administrative enforcement in cases raising issues of sexual violence. The discussion will examine a school’s duties and obligations under Title IX, as well as review how OCR evaluates the efficacy of campus sexual violence policies, programs, and responses.
- Successful Examples of Acquiring Campus Safety Grant Dollars – Michelle Kroner, UMKC Victim Services Adjudication Advisor
This training provides an overview of the requirements for acquiring the federally funded Office on Violence Against Women Campus Grant Program. The training encourages participants to think strategically about how they develop, manage, and assess performance of this grant funded project.

Curricular infusion of strategies to prevent and respond to gender-based violence and bullying has proven to be an effective method for teaching and demonstrating bystander intervention skills and techniques to college students. Graduates who have been exposed to bystander education and prevention strategies are better equipped and more likely to challenge social norms that support violence and abuse in relationships within the world of work. Classroom presentations, prevention education units and curriculum modules, and a violence prevention certificate program will be introduced and shared throughout this session.

This presentation will address opportunities and challenges for colleges and universities to collaborate with community partners in addressing gender violence. Examples and discussion will address both large and small institutions as well as models of community engagement and ideas for future work.
- A Discussion of Best Practices for College Campuses – Steven Healy, Margolis, Healy: Solutions for Safe Campuses
This workshop will focus on best practices from the participants. The facilitator will identify 5-10 “must-do’s” and will then will encourage a free-flow discussion with participants from all schools which are represented.

Well-trained student peer educators go where administrators are not invited and influence campus climate more powerfully than any other method. This session features peer educators and their advisors from large and small public universities discussing how their groups were created, their current structures and strategies, and what motivates them to do this work. Best practices and recommended resources will be shared.

Presenters will discuss the rapidly growing national movement of engaging men in the work of reducing gender and partner violence. This workshop will include both the conceptual framework and programming applications that challenge college men to speak out against inequality, sexism and violence against women.
- “Raped” or “Seduced”? How Language Helps Shape Our Response to Sexual Violence. – Claudia J. Bayliff, Attorney at Law
This interactive session will explore the language of sexual assault: how we talk about and write about this crime. We will discuss specific examples of the language we use and explore how to discuss sexual assault in a way that more accurately depicts the crime. Participants will learn to recognize troublesome language. They will also practice re-writing text to use more accountable language.
